If you have an interest in a career in some aspect of sustainability, the author believes it is more important to defer getting an advanced degree until you decide which areas of sustainability and what job functions are most appealing to you. This can be done, for example, through internship programs to gain some experience and insight as to whether a particular area and function are most enjoyable to you. Then, once you decide, and if the opportunity is available, you can pursue the type of advanced education that is most fitting to your purpose. Getting an advanced degree out of the gate before gaining some experience and insight into the possible jobs you prefer may end up being the wrong advanced degree for your career path.
