A great day celebrating sustainability in Southern Nevada and our future progress
In its ninth year, Nevada's premier annual sustainability discussion delivered an impressive roster of prestigious leaders from the public, private, non-profit and academic sectors. ConveneNV strives to provide an inside look into the unique challenges our region faces in the multi-faceted sectors of sustainability while promoting our greatest success to both residents and visitors.
Our Future in Focus demonstrated the interesting dynamic that exists in Southern Nevada between visibility and impact. It examined the optics of who we are as a community and what components of our regional genetic makeup are made visible versus the elements we don’t show, don’t see, or chose not to see. It showcased the organizations, projects, and people who are truly making an impact in the sectors of our community with the biggest opportunities for improvement identified in ImpactNV State of Sustainability report: Healthcare; Education, Arts & Culture; and our social sector.
"Our future in Energy"
The energy panel provided an in-depth look into recent announcements from City of Las Vegas on its 100% renewable achievement, and how this required the collaboration of several groups in order to succeed. The conversation developed into how MGM resorts are looking to the wholesale energy market to reduce their running costs. All of which was only made possible by working closely with NV Energy. NV Energy outlined how they are looking to tackle demand in both the residential and commercial sectors through their PowerShift campaign which offers customers smart thermostats, energy assessments and more. Programs that have been hugely successful to date. Similarly. panelists looked at how SNWA has managed to drastically cut their energy usage through water conservation methods.
"Our future in Medicine"
The Medicine panel highlighted the incredible work being done in the regional healthcare sector and how academic medicine is changing the medical landscape. The panel looked to how academia is addressing the current comparatively low ratio of medical professionals but had encouraging news about the direction of Nevada healthcare. Specifically through improved education and training at their respective institutions the panel was positive that Southern Nevada was on the incline after years of hard work.
"Art in Focus"
Jean-Francois Michaud offered an engaging presentation filled with all of the flair we have come to expect from Cirque du Soleil. Jean-Francois highlighted how sustainability has always been a key principle for Cirque, and is inbuilt into their business design. Cirque considers everything from the design of their tent to their impact on the communities they visit and most importantly how they use Art to engage their works, communities and to create happiness.
"Collaboration in Focus"
This enthusiastic discussion considered the success of a federal, state, regional, and local collaboration project, spearheaded by the Conservation District of Southern Nevada, that addresses urban agriculture, food insecurity, education, nutrition, and public private partnership. Panelists draw upon the success of the Zion Garden Park to highlight the importance of collaboration in Southern Nevada. Located in the middle of one of the highest food insecure neighborhoods in the City of North Las Vegas is blossoming an oasis of kale, spinach, carrots, and other fresh produce at the Zion Garden Park Community Garden at Zion United Methodist Church. Here panelists from North Las Vegas, The UNR Cooperative Extension, Green Our Planet, and CDSN discuss this amazing collaboration here.
A big thank you to everyone who made this day possible
